A Night in Treme: The Musical Majesty of New Orleans

A Night in Treme features music and musicians from the popular HBO series Treme. Birthplace of the great New Orleans brass band tradition, the Treme (pronounced truh-MAY) neighborhood has been a rich source of African-American music and culture. A Night in Treme features the legendary New Orleans group Soul Rebels, who will be joined by “The King of Nouveau Swing” Donald Harrison, Jr., trumpeter extraordinaire James Andrews and others. With an array of New Orleans musicians, singers and historians joining the band throughout the night, the evening will be a fitting tribute to this community, its struggles and the triumphant and joyous music that inspires its citizens to carry on.

The Count Basie Orchestra featuring New York Voices

Nearly 20 years after their Grammy®-winning collaboration, Live at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, The Count Basie Orchestra and New York Voices unite again to combine the best of the big band and vocal jazz idioms. Formed in 1935 by Count Basie, the orchestra has helped to define the big band sound and has won 17 Grammy Awards®. Musical Director Dennis Mackrel joined The Count Basie Orchestra in 1983 as the youngest member and the last drummer hired by Mr. Basie, who passed away in 1984. The orchestra will be joined by New York Voices, a Grammy®-winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing.

Jazz legend Wayne Shorter is continually expanding his body of work, which is inextricably linked to the history of modern music. A former member of the Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis’ second quintet and jazz fusion group Weather Report, Shorter’s career is woven into the fabric of jazz history. The music of this six-time Grammy®-winner transcends genre while keeping the improvisational genius and surprise of jazz burning at the center. At the Holland, Shorter will perform with his long-running quartet, which features pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade.
