Dust off your dancin’ shoes - Jazz on the Green is back! This free and funky concert series presented by Omaha Performing Arts will be jamming Thursday nights at 7:30 in Turner Park at Midtown Crossing starting July 9. Tap your toes to blues, big band, soul and more.

Stooges Brass Band

Pre-show music: BluesEd

Jazz on the Green opens July 9 with the hard-hitting horns of the Stooges Brass Band. The Stooges blend New Orleans spirit with energizing contemporary and hip-hop beats. On the scene since 1996, this elite ensemble has gained a reputation as a full-blown musical party. Tunes from BluesEd students will help get the party started. Prepare to bust a move.

Plena Libre

Pre-Show Salsa Dance Lessons by Omaha Ballroom

Puerto Rican-based Plena Libre plays July 16 at Jazz on the Green, presented by Omaha Performing Arts at Midtown Crossing. National Geographic magazine credits this Grammy-nominated ensemble for “spearheading the Latin invasion of American popular music.” The virtuoso musicians blend merengue, mambo and even salsa into one captivating performance.  Before the show, Omaha Ballroom will teach you how to move to the beat of the drums.

The Sideguys

You may not know their names, but you’ve probably heard their music. The talented musicians in The Sideguys have played with nationally touring artists including Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks and Boz Scaggs. The spotlight will shine on these “side men” July 23 at Jazz on the Green, presented by Omaha Performing Arts at Midtown Crossing. R&B, soul, jazz and rock – they really do play it all. Nebraska Jazz Orchestra

Pre-Show Swing Dance Lessons by Omaha Ballroom

You’ll flip for Lincoln’s premier big band, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra. Founded in 1975, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra dazzles audiences with traditional compositions as well as original arrangements. The Jazz Times praises the ensemble as “proof positive that jazz isn’t just a New York or New Orleans or Chicago or Kansas City thing.” Come early for swing dance lessons taught by Omaha Ballroom.

Sonny Knight and the Lakers

Expect more than Motown and Stax-inspired sounds from this soulful Minneapolis band. Sonny Knight and the Lakers take the stage August 6. Nearly 50 years after his first single, Knight breathes new life into the forgotten soul sounds of the ’60s and ’70s. The band boasts performances that ooze with exuberance and energy.

Mia Borders

Jazz on the Green wraps up for the summer with an endlessly soulful performance by Mia Borders. The New Orleans singer/songwriter embodies the spirit of her hometown and is heralded as one of its best talents.
