We're proud to participate in the Broadway League’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards for a 5th year! Two outstanding student performers (one lead actor and one lead actress) will be nominated to join top students from across the country for a week of private coaching with NYU Tisch faculty, master classes with Broadway professionals and rehearsals in preparation for The Jimmy® Awards Showcase at the Minskoff Theater on Broadway. Nominees also receive opportunities for merit scholarships, professional advancement and other awards. All travel, accommodation and food costs will be paid for by Omaha Performing Arts. The National High School Musical Theatre Awards is scheduled for the week leading up to The Jimmy® Awards Showcase on Monday, June 25, 2018. National nominees are determined through an application and audition process.

Students in grades 9-12 playing qualified lead roles in their adjudicated 2017/2018 NHSTA musicals are eligible. Qualified lead roles are determined by the Broadway League. See the 2017/2018 list of qualified lead roles.

Eligible students should submit an online application by Friday, March 30, 2018. To complete the application, please be prepared to submit the following items:

  • One-page resume
  • Headshot photo
  • Audition video #1: Perform a solo (32-bar cut) from the qualified lead role you played in your adjudicated 2017/2018 high school musical 
  • Audition video #2: Perform a solo (32-bar cut) of a musical theater ballad OR musical theater up-tempo piece of your choice

Please note! Videos should showcase your audition abilities. Do NOT submit video from a fully staged or costumed production. 

A limited number of applicants will be invited to attend a live callback audition at the Holland Center on Saturday, April 14, 2018. The callback will include a dance call, where students will learn a short piece of choreography to perform for the audition panel. Students will also be asked to perform the 2 songs submitted as a part of their application. OPA will hire a professional accompanist – please bring hardcopies of your sheet music with cuts clearly marked. Callbacks and other details will be announced in early April 2018.

The callback audition panel will select up to 12 finalists (6 actors and 6 actresses) to perform as a part of the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 7:30pm at the Orpheum Theater. Finalists should plan to attend showcase rehearsals at the Holland Center starting Monday, June 4, 2018 and must be available to perform at the showcase. National Finalists will be provided with free housing at Creighton University, meals, and transporation to/from dorms and rehearsal sites during the rehearsal week. National Finalists will be announced in early-May 2018. 

From the group of 12 National Finalists, 2 outstanding student performers (1 actor and 1 actress) will be selected to represent the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in NYC on Monday, June 25, 2018. The 2 nominees will be announced live onstage at the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 7:30pm. Nominees should be available to travel to NYC from June 19-26, 2018. More details coming soon!
